Canada confirms BSE case

February 26, 2008

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced today it has confirmed Canada’s 12th case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in a 6-year-old Alberta dairy cow. CFIA reports that no part of the animal entered the human food or animal feed supply. The full announcement is available on the CFIA Web site section dedicated to BSE updates and alerts. Canada diagnosed its 11th case of BSE on Dec. 18, 2007. CFIA points out in its announcement that this most recent case will not affect the country’s international status as a Controlled Risk for BSE with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
